Reverse Headgear - Lollipop Dental Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics

Reverse Headgear

Reverse Headgear is an orthodontic appliance used in growing patients to correct an underbite and help enhance the growth and development of the upper jaw by pulling the upper jaw forward. It is very critical to start at a young age while the child’s bones are still soft. Using this appliance could potentially avoid the need for jaw correction surgery in the future.

What to Expect During Treatment:

  • This appliance should be worn for about 12-14 hours a day.
  • Speech alterations are normal until your child becomes use to the appliance.
  • Avoid chewing any sticky or crunchy foods ( i.e starbursts, skittles, gum, jolly ranchers, peanuts, ice, etc)
  • If the appliance becomes loose for any reason, please bring your child in as soon as possible.
  • Avoid carbonated beverages (sprite, sodas) to avoid dissolving the cement.
  • Some soreness for the first few days is normal. You may give your child Children’s Tylenol or Children Motrin as needed.
  • Adjustment period time can take up to 1-2 weeks.
