Orthodontic Foods to Avoid

Congratulations on your journey to a beautiful new smile! Please follow these instructions on foods to avoid so you don’t damage or loosen your appliances and/or braces!

In general, it is best to avoid hard, sticky, chewy foods, as well as foods and drinks that are high in sugar and acidity.

Examples of Hard Foods to Avoid:   Hard Chips, French bread, Hard rolls or Crusts, Granola bars, Hard cereals, Chewing Ice, Hard candies

Examples of Sticky Foods to Avoid:  Gum, Gummies, Jelly Beans, Taffy, Caramels, Starbursts, Laffy Taffy, Candy bars, Sticky Candies –

Cut the following types of foods into small pieces and chew with the back teeth: Apples, Carrots, Steak, Corn on the Cob, Chicken Wings, Pizza

Avoid Carbonated Beverages and Acidic Beverages: Sodas and Acid drinks (Lemonade, Orange juice, etc) because they dissolve the glue that holds the braces in place and cause them to come off easier/

Avoid Biting on Hard Objects: such as pens, pencils, fingernails, etc. as they can loosen the braces and appliances

Loose Braces or Pokey Wires

Loose Braces:

There are very few true orthodontic emergencies. If your braces become loose from eating hard or sticky foods, simply leave it on the wire and contact our office to schedule an appointment to have it repaired.  If the bracket/band comes off the wire, please save it and bring it to your next appointment. There is a replacement fee for any missing or broken appliances or braces.

Pokey Wires:

Your orthodontic wires will get longer in the back and shift as your teeth move and get straighter!  That is completely normal and it might start poking or scratching your cheek. If the wire begins to poke your cheek or gums, dry the area with a Qtip and place a small piece of wax in the pokey area.  Contact our office to schedule our office to have it trimmed.
